The movie follows Diancie, a Mythical Pokémon who rules the underground Diamond Domain. The Heart Diamond that sustains the land is beginning to crumble, and Diancie sets out on a quest to find the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas, who can teach her how to create a new one. Along the way, she meets Ash Ketchum and his friends, who join her on her adventure. However, Diancie is also pursued by a group of thieves who want to capture her for her diamond-producing power.

The group eventually reaches the Allearth Forest, where Xerneas resides. However, they also awaken the Legendary Pokémon Yveltal, who is the embodiment of destruction. Yveltal rampages across the land, and it is up to Diancie and her friends to stop it.
